John Stowell is an American jazz guitarist, composer, author, and lecturer based in Portland, Oregon. Over five decades he has developed one of the most original voices in jazz guitar — influenced as much by pianists and horn players as by fellow guitarists. John's career includes a prolific seven-year duo with bassist David Friesen, performances with Milt Jackson, Lionel Hampton, Art Farmer, and many others, and a historic 1983 tour of the Soviet Union — the first by an American jazz group in over 40 years. He has recorded numerous albums on Origin Records and has been a contributing columnist for Down Beat, Guitar Player, and Canadian Musician for over two decades. An in-demand clinic educator, John has taught at Berklee, Manhattan School of Music, Musicians Institute, and universities across North America, Europe, and Asia. His GuitarVivo book offers a deep dive into his trademark harmonic approach — open-string voicings, close intervals, and pianistic melodic thinking.
