Ben Kerrigan
Ben Kerrigan is one of the UK’s most exciting emerging guitar voices, known for blending deep theoretical knowledge with fiercely musical phrasing. A dedicated improviser and educator, Ben studied with fusion legend Frank Gambale and has spent decades transcribing and internalising the language of Scott Henderson, Guthrie Govan, Michael Brecker, Allan Holdsworth, and other modern masters.
His teaching approach focuses on distilling advanced harmonic concepts into simple, pattern-based systems that guitarists can actually use in real time. Stepping Outside is his latest project rooted in years of exploration—designed to give players a fresh, intuitive path into outside soloing, tension and release, and improvisational freedom.

Course Overview
Chapter 1: Minor Pentatonic Sidestepping
Learn how to step outside using the simplest possible system: sidestepping pentatonic shapes up or down a fret. This chapter shows how to create tension and resolution using A minor and Bb minor pentatonic, develop phrasing with rhythmic groupings, and visualise sidestepping through the CAGED system. You’ll also learn how to apply sidestepping to B and E minor pentatonics for more varied melodic colour.
Chapter 2: Sidestepping in the Blues
Apply sidestepping to dominant 7th harmony using Mixolydian, dominant pentatonic, and Bb9 arpeggios. This chapter explores inside/outside phrasing using G#, C#, and F# minor pentatonics over a Bb7 vamp, blending blues vocabulary with chromaticism. Learn to create authentic blues phrasing using both major and minor 3rds, swing rhythms, and multiple “inside” options like Bb Hexatonic and Bb7 pentatonic.
Chapter 3: Sidestepping Through Chord Changes
Take sidestepping beyond static harmony and use it to navigate non-diatonic progressions like Dm7–Fm7. You’ll learn how to chromatically connect unrelated chords using sequential sidesteps, mix inside and outside pentatonics, and build lines that shift tonal centers with clarity. The chapter also covers whole-tone sidestepping, pattern sequencing, and tension-building across modulating vamps.
Chapter 4: Hexatonic, Melodic Minor, and Half–Whole Tone Language
Move beyond pentatonics with C major hexatonic, F# hexatonic, and F melodic minor to navigate harmonically rich funk and gospel changes. You’ll learn how to layer outside sounds within a single phrase, resolve tension mid-line, and superimpose advanced scales like half–whole diminished—all while staying grounded in fretboard-friendly patterns.
Chapter 5: Visualisation Systems & Integrated Practice
Put it all together with structured systems to visualise, drill, and internalise sidestepping across the neck. You’ll master horizontal motion between CAGED positions, practice sidestepping sequences using rhythmic motifs, and combine multiple outside sounds into cohesive, expressive lines. Includes guided strategies for developing fluency and creative control in any context.
