A beautifully organized and written book written by the legend themself.
Great addition! Really digs deep into breaking down seemingly difficult techniques into bite sized doable challenges. Make sure to take advantage of the bonus content to really focus on each technique. Was super helpful and provides multiple viewing angles of each etude. Can’t say enough good things about this book.

A must-have for any guitarist interested in modern technique
Having bought the digital version a couple of days prior to the physical version arriving, I can say that this has already become one of my favourite study books. There’s lots to unpack here – 10 etudes, each with an overview, performance advice, interactive tabs, and two video angles of Manuel himself performing the etude. The performance advice is probably my favourite inclusion – it gives you heaps to work on, and helps you refine the technique beyond the piece itself.

Manuel Gardner Fernandes
Don Mock’s musical journey spans rock, blues, and jazz, culminating in a unique fusion style. Starting as a 60s rock enthusiast, he quickly became a respected guitarist and educator, known for his technical mastery and improvisational concepts, documented in numerous instructional materials. He was a key figure at the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT), shaping its curriculum and producing videos featuring guitar legends.
Beyond performing and teaching, Mock directed and produced instructional videos for renowned artists, and composed music for hydroplane racing documentaries. He currently teaches at the Roberts Music Institute and performs as a guitar duo, continuing to influence guitarists with his diverse talents and extensive experience.
Course Overview
Etude 1: Percussive Strumming
Discover the art of using the guitar as a percussive instrument. This etude explores dead notes, rhythmic accents, and strumming mechanics to develop groove and articulation. Influenced by flamenco and drum-inspired phrasing, this piece lays the groundwork for building a rhythmic vocabulary on the instrument.
Etude 2: Tapping & Tapped Harmonics
This piece introduces two-handed tapping and tapped harmonics to craft melodic, expressive lines. You’ll explore major 7 and add9 chords, tone balance between hands, and the unique texture of harmonics. Compression, effects, and proper finger positioning are all discussed to help bring out the full potential of these modern techniques.
Etude 3: Hybrid Picking
Use a combination of pick and fingers to execute intricate lines with unique articulation. The etude features Lydian-flavored melodies, natural harmonics, and open-string integration for a dynamic sound. You’ll refine finger coordination, rhythmic clarity, and dynamic control with this versatile picking method.
Etude 4: Thumping
Adapted from bass guitar techniques, thumping (a combination of slapping and popping) becomes a percussive voice on the electric guitar. This etude showcases its funk origins while evolving into melodic and harmonic guitar territory. Emphasis is placed on thumb motion, hand coordination, and percussive accuracy.
Etude 5: Hammer-Ons, Pull-Offs, & Slides
Explore expressive legato playing through a blend of hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, and hammer-ons from nowhere. Built in a classic ABA form, this ambient etude encourages fluid motion and subtle dynamics. Effects and rhythmic control take center stage as you strive for a piano-like touch.
Etude 6: Chordal Techniques
This etude focuses on melodic chord voicings, arpeggiation, and dynamic chord phrasing. You’ll experiment with slides, hammer-ons within chords, open string drones, and neo-soul inspired progressions. A rich blend of piano and anime music influences make this piece a masterclass in chordal expression.
Etude 7: Picking Techniques
Delve into the nuances of palm muting, pinch harmonics, and downstroke patterns with this etude. Rather than enforcing strict alternate picking, this piece emphasizes musical choice and rhythmic contrast. It’s a dense technical workout that tests your ability to blend picking with percussive and legato techniques seamlessly.
Etude 8: Putting it All Together – Intermediate
Begin combining previously isolated techniques into a unified performance. This intermediate-level piece blends melody, chords, and rhythm in the style of a solo piano composition. You’ll be challenged to shift positions smoothly and balance contrasting textures with both hands.
Etude 9: Putting it All Together – Advanced
This etude ramps up the speed and complexity while integrating all techniques learned so far. You’ll work through wider chords, intricate strumming, and dynamic phrasing in a form that resembles a modern instrumental song. It’s a demanding piece designed to push your coordination and expression.
Etude 10: Putting it All Together – Final Boss
The ultimate challenge, this etude is packed with rapid passages, octave jumps, and intense rhythmic complexity. Its EDM-inspired sequencing feel adds a robotic twist, while the harmony remains intentionally simple to spotlight phrasing and timing. Expect to work bar-by-bar as you refine every technical detail.
